Münster's Life Science profile is characterised by institutes and research centres who have directed their research towards common core areas, such as:

The majority of biotech companies in the region are also affiliated to these technology sectors. Coming out from local research centres, they cultivate further close co-operations. These interactions have generated a cluster of focused competence.

A successful example project is Nano2Life, the only Network of Excellence in the sector of nanobiotechnology, funded by the EU's 6th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development. Nano2Life consists of 23 european partners, structured in 5 clusters of competence. Münster is one of these clusters and coordinates the networks activities together with Grenoble (F).
